Your Operation
We know the thought of surgery can be unsettling and leave you with questions. Below, we’ve taken the time to describe the surgery process so you can better understand what’s involved. For more details on your specific surgery, please see Surgical Services where we’ve put together information about each procedure we perform.
You will be prepared by the nurses in the Pre-Op area. The paper work, appropriate lab work, history and physical, consent and other items will be double checked. An IV will be inserted into a vein in your arm, and the area to be operated on may need to be marked. You will meet your Anesthesiologist.
Then you will meet the Circulating Nurse, who will do another series of checks to confirm who you are and what kind of operation you are to undergo. She will take you in your cart to the Operating Room. The lights may be bright and the temperature cold. We may ask you to move onto the operating table, if you are unable, we will assist you.
In order to make you comfortable you will most likely receive a sedative. This drug can cause loss of memory and it is possible you will not remember some or most of these events.
The anesthesiologist will then proceed to place you in a state in which we will be able to perform the surgery without you being aware or in pain. This may require the placement of a breathing tube into your windpipe to control your breathing. This could result in having a sore throat after surgery.
For details regarding your specific surgery, please check one of the links under Surgical Services. If you have additional questions make sure you ask Dr. Mahoney or Dr. Caballero during your visit.
After the surgery you will be transported to the Recovery Room, where you will be taken care of by a Post-Anesthesia Nurse until you are alert enough to either return to Same Day Surgery or be admitted to your inpatient hospital room.
