Preparing For Surgery
A successful outcome can depend on how well you prepare for surgery. Here are some easy tips to help you plan for your surgery.
Eating/Drinking
Eating or drinking after midnight the night before your operation is prohibited, unless explicitly approved by your surgeon and or anesthesiologist. An empty stomach is essential in order to avoid the complications of vomiting during the anesthesia process.
Medications
Instructions for changes of insulin doses will be discussed with you. Oral medications may be taken with a sip of water if so instructed. Blood thinners need to be stopped at least three days before the operation.
Driving Post Surgery
You will not be able to drive home if you are having any type of anesthesia except local anesthesia. If your surgery is scheduled as an outpatient make sure you arrange for transportation back home.
Returning Home Alone
We do not recommend that you stay at home alone after undergoing surgery. You may benefit from the help of a family member or friend the first couple of days after surgery. Please make the appropriate arrangements.
Valuables
Do not bring any valuables to the hospital or surgery center. All that is needed your insurance card and a form of ID.
Piercings/Jewelry
Remove all jewelry prior to your surgery, if a foreign body is needed to keep the piercing intact please make sure it is made of plastic, however if the piercing is near the area of incision no foreign body will be allowed as it may increase the risk of infection.
Cleansing
A shower with soap is recommended prior to the operation. If you are having belly button surgery (laparoscopic) make certain to pay extra attention to cleansing it during your shower. In some cases you may be asked to shower with a special soap.
Shaving
Please do not shave the area to be operated on. Regular shaving may increase the risk of infections. Let us do the hair removal at the hospital.
Bowel Preparation
A bowel prep is needed for some operations. Please follow those instructions closely.
Antibiotics
If indicated, we will administer the antibiotics just before your incision.
