Care After Operation
You’ve successfully made it through surgery. Now we want to make sure the recovery process is effective. Below please find a list of tips to help you through this healing time. If at any time you have a concern about your health please do not hesitate to contact us.
Diet
You will be given instructions regarding any specific dietary restrictions that apply following your surgery. Eating light meals on the day of surgery is generally recommended. Any foods that would cause constipation should be avoided.
Activity
Walking is a recommended exercise after surgery and using the stairs is allowed. Lifting restrictions apply after most procedures and specific instructions will be given upon your discharge from the hospital or surgery center.
Return to Work
Time off of work depends on the surgery performed as well as the patient’s occupation. Your surgeon will discuss this with you before and after your operation.
Pain Medication
Medication for pain is needed after most operations and will be prescribed by your surgeon. The side effects include NAUSEA and CONSTIPATION. Common sense use of the medications should minimize these side effects and in most situations any over the counter remedy can be used for constipation.
Care of the Incision
Most incisions will have a dressing in place and you will be instructed on removal or changing of the dressing. Swelling and bruising are to be expected with most procedures and this can often be reduced by applying an ice pack to the incision.
When to Call Your Surgeon
Symptoms such as persistent fever (greater than 100.5°), redness or drainage from the incision or increasing pain are valid reasons to notify your surgeon. You will receive discharge instructions that will help you know what specific symptoms would be normal and expected following your operation.
